Apt. on a Slab - what to use to divert water here? Help!!!!?

We rent and our unit is at the bottom of the hill and water collects all around our slab and even gets on the carpet. What material should be used to divert the water away from the unit? Dirt, peat moss....sod??? Our landlord is not doing much but threw some dirt down and now it's washing away. We also get tons of bugs and worms inside due to this problem.
