What is the average root span of a tree?

A rule of thumb is the roots extend as far out as the tips of the branches. As for planting any tree close to a structure, it is recommended that they are no closer than 10', and when I do any landscaping/planting, I keep them 15' - 20' away. Any closer and you risk the limbs rubbing your soffits, fascia and eventually shingles.
