My dog ate a sock and it caused a bowel obstruction. However, instead of the vet having to surgically remove?

my dog ate a sock and it caused a bowel obstruction. However, instead of the vet having to surgically remove it, she was able to reach through his and feel it and pull it while "milking" his stomach. Has anyone had a pet or heard of this procedure being used and if so what are the pros and cons? Please help with any info you know. Thanks!!!
